One of my greatest friends, Steve
Hammond, who has worked with me for 14 years, recently announced his retirement
from Neighbourhood Connections, the organisation that supports me. He is truly a
friend of mine and we will still keep in touch. I would like to pay tribute to
my dear Steve.
The first time we met was in
November 2001, just four months after I was diagnosed with autism. I was
nervous and still remember the day well.
We had about five hours a
week together. It didn't feel like support and felt more like being with a great
mate.
Steve helped me start my
career in writing and helped me write four books all about my autism which
helped me and people around me understand me better.
We have had seven dogs in our
in time together. My own late Mackie who died in November 2005. My friends dog,
Rover, who I met in May 2006 and started walking in July 2006. Rover died at the
very young age of eight in August 2010. Jonah and Rosie are still alive. I met
Jonah in 2008 and started walking him in 2009 then Rosie in August 2010, after
Rover died. Steve had Jess, Peppy and
Summer who were all good dogs.
Hearing that Steve was
retiring was like hearing about a loved one dying and like losing a
family member.
I thank you, Steve, for being such great friend.
